And Mr Roy, you have destroyed forever the charm of fairy tales and Disney films with your Freudian based criticisms and "reading between the lines." You showed me how much fun English can be and so, when I am at Warwick University, getting to grips with Politics, Philosophy and Economics, there will always be a part of me that regrets my decision not to study English. Miss Diomampo, your patience in the face of our literary chauvinism and misogyny is an inspiration to us all and we all wish you the very best of luck for the future. Mr Parsons, your inventive name calling and ever present good humour, both in and out of the classroom, made GCSE English a very enjoyable experience. Over the years, English has definitely become my favourite subject, entirely due to the enthusiasm and energy of some of the teachers sitting here in front of me today. Although Mr Loudon is not here today, I know that I speak on behalf of everyone in my year when I say that he will be much missed. I say that especially about Mr Loudon, who had to suffer my ironic remarks (he called them sarcastic) Andrew and his sister at Speeches 2 thelyonian2008,ĥ l for three whole years. I should like to take this opportunity to thank those teachers who have influenced me over the past seven years: first, my form tutors: Mr Westlake, Mrs Plummer, Mr Loudon and Mr Roy who created such a feeling of group identity within the forms and who were always there if I had any problems to discuss. The friendships we build with our teachers, the attachment we feel towards the geography of the school and the sense of community and fraternity between the boys which remains long after we leave the school. In some ways, it was as if they were showing me round and I realised that that is one of the most wonderful achievements of the John Lyon School. Nonetheless, what struck me most was the strength of the ties they had with the school. What's in here?" We were standing in front of Oldfield House, the place that has been my spiritual home in the school: and it was utterly new to them. At one point, they all stopped and declared, "Wow. After a few minutes, one of the Old Boys turned around and asked, "Have you still got a school goat?" Well, as you can imagine, I was rather surprised and my surprise was only heightened by the ensuing, quite animated, conversation about old Demelza! And the Old Boys continued to surprise me as we walked around, by looking in wonderment at buildings that I could not imagine the school without. The only thing that makes tours a little tedious, at times, is the fact that you always get asked the same questions: "What are you studying? How do you like the school? How do the boys get on with one another?" So I was expecting that kind of thing. Now, I've been conducting tours pretty much since I came to the school and it's always an interesting thing to do. Gilbert, Faisal and I were acting as tour guides to Old Boys and pointing out developments that the school had undergone in recent years. Kevin Riley HeadmasterĤ 10 weeks ago, the Headmaster asked me to help out at a '30 Years On' dlbout Old Lyonians' get-together. It is a remarkable community - a model for the 21 st century in London. As I contemplate my final year in the school before my move to Bangkok, I am particularly proud of the way in which boys from so many different cultures and faiths flourish together at school. You will read about their work for the school in this edition. At the end of 2008 we said goodbye to four longserving and highly valued members of staff (pictured below): Bob Shaw, Roger French, Graham Ryder and Paricia Waldron.

Education and Exam Results are not synonymous! The expedition to India was a particular highlight but I am sure all the boys in the school can be proud of a personal goal achieved during the year. We strongly believe that a well rounded education will result in boys obtaining excellent exam results and that was certainly the case this year. 2007/08 was an excellent year for the school, rounded off by some outstanding examination results. It is also good to read so many excellent examples of interesting and varied articles many a writing career has begun on the school magazine.
The quiet in the school when the magazine arrives and the boys read it bears testimony to their interest in it. The editorial team at JLS, led by Kate Wickson, manages this brilliantly. It is a difficult task to edit such a magazine because it must reconcile being 'a good read' with the need to the official record of the school.
